Sullivan on Comp is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable individual to join our content subscription service team, which focuses on a legal treatise on California workers' compensation. This unique role involves managing, expanding, and meticulously curating our collection of over 16,000 references to specific California precedent cases. The successful candidate will possess a deep understanding of California workers' compensation law, the hierarchy of relevant California courts, and various citation formats. In addition to these foundational legal skills, the role demands a vision for organizing and presenting this content in ways that are both user-friendly and beneficial for subscribers. This includes linking cases to their existing references within the treatise, exploring innovative ways to structure the material, and ensuring its relevance in the ever-evolving legal landscape. Work from any of our locations or remotely!KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Required Skills Legal Knowledge and Research Familiarity with the hierarchy of California courts , including the distinction between appellate, superior, and supreme courts. Ability to interpret legal citations and to correctly apply different citation formats. Legal research skills , including familiarity with tools like Westlaw, LexisNexis, and other specialized databases. Knowledge of the precedent system and how decisions from higher courts impact lower courts. Archival Research Capability : Proficiency in sourcing older, hard-to-find cases using a variety of methods including legal archives, university libraries, historical databases, and liaising with legal historians or institutions. Familiarity with California workers' compensation law is a strong bonus but not required. Organizational and Analytical Content curation : Ability to discern which cases are most relevant and how they fit into the broader landscape of the treatise. Taxonomy and classification skills : Categorizing cases based on various factors, such as relevance, date, or jurisdiction. Analytical skills to spot trends, patterns, and gaps in the collection of cases. Communication and Collaboration Clear written and verbal communication : Essential for drafting descriptions, communicating with team members, and collaborating with stakeholders. Ability to collaborate with authors, editors, and other content creators to ensure seamless integration of cases. Presentation skills to showcase and explain the organized content to internal teams or subscribers. The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following skills and experience: Problem-solving ability : Navigating challenges, such as missing case documents or conflicting interpretations. Attention to detail : Ensuring accuracy in citations, references, and legal interpretations. Adaptability : The legal and tech landscapes can change, so flexibility is key. Ethical considerations : Ensuring the content is used and presented in a way that respects copyright and other legal boundaries. Continuous learning mindset : Laws and legal interpretations evolve, so a willingness to stay updated is crucial. Project management skills : Overseeing the process from start to finish, managing timelines, and ensuring milestones are met. Passion for the work : A genuine joy in helping to improve the working life of California workers' compensation practitioners. Additional Preferred Technical Skills PDF management : Understanding of tools to extract, edit, annotate, and organize PDF documents. Database management : Ability to organize, search, and manage a large collection of cases. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS). Linking and cross-referencing skills to connect cases with their references in the treatise. Basic programming or scripting skills for automation or to work closely with IT teams. Product Management and User Experience User experience (UX) mindset : Ability to envision and design an intuitive and user-friendly interface for subscribers. Product management skills : Understanding of back-end organization, future scalability, and potential new features.
